In The American Scene, Henry James recapitulates many of the commonplaces of picturesque travel writing. However, while the New York cityscape puts inordinate pressure on the discriminations upon which this genre depends, James intermittently transcends both the ensuing implosion of its more genteel distinctions and the conventional intertwining of fictional and descriptive motifs which the picturesque encourages. Indeed, the monuments on Riverside Heights afford the traveller a prospect which impels him to radicalise the most potent historico-political and epistemological dimensions of picturesque writing. |
