Barack Obama's election may portend a significant change in the politics of race and ethnicity in America. The New Deal political system was built around economic class, while the issue of racial equality languished unaddressed. But by the 1960s, race had replaced class. The Democratic coalition was deeply divided on race, and Republicans built their comeback around the white South and racial wedge issues. In 2008, the economic crisis and the anti-immigrant policies of Republicans led to a massive Democratic victory. Obama dominated voting among the young, first time voters, minorities, Jews, and in all regions save the South. Demographic trends showed a bright future for Obama's coalition. The economic crisis has revived the politics of class. Yet race and ethnicity are still underlying issues in American politics. Because of the central role of the presidency in American culture, an African American president may reshape notions of leadership. |
