When Katrina hit New Orleans in August 2005, it first seemed that music would figure among the casualties of the storm. Yet given the sheer outpouring of songs and shows that followed, it soon became clear that musical activity would play a major role in the reconstruction of the city, both on a material and a symbolic level. No musical format has been more present in the post-Katrina era than the cover song. It has come to symbolize the community's response to the storm, and can help one understand the unique role music has played in New Orleans. This article examines the specificity of cover songs in the musical reaction to Katrina. It focuses on what the author considers to be their three most fundamental functions: affirming resilience, rebuilding community, and allowing for a historical reading of the storm. |
