The Buddhist tradition is not usually best-known for its activism or for its political and social engagement, but as it enters mainstream society in the United States, it finds itself undergoing certain changes. One of the most significant of these is its gradual feminization with the steady increase in the number of women in positions of authority. These female teachers are activists in so far as they are being invested with the authority to lead centers or monasteries, contrary to the usual patriarchal patterns observed in the still widely male and Asian-dominated traditions of Buddhism, which are being transmitted on American soil. Others are self-empowering in the absence of a significant authority, thus establishing themselves as new models of leadership in spiritual communities, which may come to serve as organizational models or references in the wider society. These female teachers are addressing problems which are specific to women, organizing all-female retreats and honoring the feminine in its many aspects. Their concern with issues of globalization shapes the dynamics of their group actions. This article presents an overview of this innovative, recent and discreet change in the dynamics of a world religion as it is establishing itself in a new territory and being appropriated by women. |
