The genesis of islamic anthropology: Masʿoudi and the voyage to do discover and to recognize the other: Abu Hassan Ali al-Masʿoudi (d.346/957) is considered the most famous muslim traveler and has left many books, we got them two important: "Murūǧ al-Ḏahab" and "al-Tanbīh wal Išrāf". Despite the fact that we consider him as historian above all, what distinguishes his writings not tell, but what he narrated about his observations in the areas and regions where he had visited China and India, Central Asia, Anatolia and Armenia in addition to the arabic countries (Iraq, Syria, Oman, Yemen and Egypt). Masʿoudi as interested groups and nations along the lines of what he is doing now, where anthropologists describe us in detail the physical features of these and tried to explain the differences in color or shape of natural and environmental factors. He also tried to give us a clear idea of their customs and traditions concerning the celebrations, funerals ways of life and clothing and food with customization on things that seem strange or weird or rare. Masʿoudi was one of the first Muslim scholars who wrote in these areas so we are not exaggerating when we consider him a pioneer of anthropology. In this presentation I will address the following points: 1- Masʿoudi and his style in the description of the areas visited. 2-Masʿoudi Scientific thought and his anthropologic orientation. 3-Masʿoudi and the cultures of East Asia: China and India. |
