This study investigated the role of culture in enhancing listening comprehension among first-year students at Mohamed Lamine Debaghine University. Based on the results of a Focus Group Discussion with twenty-three first-year students and a pre-questionnaire with five oral-expression teachers, it was found that students struggle with listening comprehension due to unfamiliarity with the target culture, speech rate issues, accent varieties, and word segmentation intricacies. Moreover, teachers focus primarily on grammar-driven activities and give little weight to cultural knowledge and top-down interpretive skills. The study aimed to investigate the extent to which culture affects listening comprehension, with the hypothesis that integrating culture will significantly improve the experimental group's listening comprehension compared to the control group. To this end, a mixed-method approach was utilized. A pre-experimental phase englobed a placement test and a demographic information questionnaire. Furthermore, an experimental phase included a pre-test administration then treatment application then eventually a post-test distribution. To finalize this investigation, a post-reflection phase entailed a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The results hoarded from the post-test proved statistically the positive effect that culture integration had on enhancing listening comprehension. Over and above, the semi-structured interview in addition to the questionnaire unearthed the positive reflections of the experimental group on the implemented treatment. Accordingly, this study suggests the importance of establishing a clear understanding of the construct of listening comprehension before designing a listening course. This understanding can assist teachers in effectively integrating culture according to the specific needs of their students. Furthermore, to promote EFL learners' listening comprehension, teachers should go beyond the structural presentation of culture. They should enable their students to decipher the underlying cultural codes that lead to specific behaviours. |
